High-pressure rubber hoses transport various media, including hydraulic oil, water, air, and emulsions. Different media have completely different requirements for the hose's inner rubber material and structure, so selection cannot be generalized. This article breaks down the key selection points according to media type.
I. Mineral Oil and Hydraulic Oil Transportation
Most construction machinery uses mineral oil-based hydraulic oil, which is the most typical application scenario for high-pressure rubber hoses. The standard operating temperature for steel wire braided and steel wire spiral hoses is -40℃ to +100℃ for oil media. NBR inner rubber is the standard choice; for operating conditions where the oil temperature consistently exceeds 100℃, an upgrade to HNBR is required.
When selecting a hose, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the system operating pressure is within the hose's rated range. For hoses that are frequently used and bent, the operating pressure should be reduced by 40%.
II. Water-Based Media Transportation
When transporting water, emulsions, water glycol, and other water-based media, the inner rubber material must have good water resistance. Ordinary NBR performance may degrade under prolonged water immersion. In such cases, EPDM inner rubber should be used, or the water resistance rating of the NBR formulation should be confirmed.
The operating temperature range for water-based media is typically 0℃ to 80℃. At low temperatures, freezing must be prevented to avoid hose damage. For water-based media containing sand or slurry, the abrasion resistance of the inner rubber layer must also be considered.
III. Compressed Air Transportation
When transporting compressed air, the long-term effects of trace moisture in the air and compressor oil on the hose inner rubber must be considered. The operating temperature range is -30℃ to +50℃ for air media. Pressure pulses common in pneumatic systems can also cause fatigue damage to hoses; pulse life must be considered during selection.
IV. Mandatory Requirements for Special Media
For polar media such as phosphate ester fire-resistant oils and brake fluids (DOT3/DOT4), EPDM inner rubber must be used; NBR is incompatible with these media. When transporting acidic media containing H₂S, specially formulated modified HNBR or FKM inner rubber must be used.
